State, Tribe, and Local Government Information

NEPA establishes the environmental review process for Federal agency decisions. Similarly, a number of states, Tribes, and localities have established their own laws and mandates requiring similar types of environmental impact assessment processes for their own activities or decisions.

Sometimes a Federal agency decision will require a Federal environmental review under NEPA as well as an environmental impact assessment under a state, Tribal, or local law. CEQ has long encouraged agencies to coordinate these reviews to avoid duplication and ensure efficiency.

The following is a list of state or local government environmental impact assessment requirements that are similar to NEPA.
